San Diego Airport (SAN) has a rather fascinating history. Dedicated in
August, 1928, it was the site chosen as the starting point, for the journey that would ultimately become Charles Lindbergh’s first non-stop solo transatlantic flight, in the Spirit of St. Louis. An aircraft that was itself built in San Diego.
During World War II, the airport was run by the U.S.Army Air Corps, who reinforced and elongated the runway to 8,750 feet for military aircraft. Today, SAN employs around 5,000 employees and is home for 18 airlines, in two large terminals. SAN also contributes over 5 billion dollars to the local economy.
Over 300 flights a day leave SAN. Each year more than 17 million passengers (2005) pass thru this busy airport. Flights depart to anywhere you’d like to go, either via non-stop or connecting flights.
There is only one mode of public transportation to SAN - the Metropolitan Transit System, Flyer Route 992. This route runs to and from both SAN terminals and downtown San Diego, connecting with Amtrak, Coaster and Trolley. The shuttle service is located at the transportation plazas across from each terminal.
Numerous eateries are located in each terminal, serving pizza to Asian food to McDonalds. Hallmark Cards, several bookstores and newsstands, candy shops, tee shirts and souvenirs are handy for your perusal.
If you’re lucky, while you are at SAN, you may be able to take in a performance. The airport hosts various performing arts concerts.
