The airport began construction in 1927, and Charles Lindbergh dedicated it in September, 1927. Several famous aviators departed for historic flights from Oakland.
The first scheduled flights came into Oakland in December 1927, and have continued to this day. In 1943 the facility was turned into a military base and served as a supplier for the Pacific war effort, and in 1946 commercial flights returned.
Oakland Airport has two terminals and four runways, covers 2,600 acres, and offers commercial, cargo, and general aviation operations, with several FBOs offering general aviation at the airport. It also offers a maintenance operation, several flight schools, and an aviation museum on the property.
Oakland International Airport serves a variety of domestic and international locations, and in 2008, 11.5 million passengers used the complex, a $300 million expansion was completed in that year. The facility is a favorite of low-cost airlines like Southwest, and most destinations are in the United States and Mexico. Oakland Airport is not connected to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) network, but there are AirBART shuttles that connect passengers with area BART stations, and the AC Transit buses connect, as well.
Many regional hotels offer door-to-door shuttle service between the airport and their locations, and there are limousines, taxis, and shuttles available at the airport, as well.
Oakland International Airport is located a 1 Airport Drive, directly off Highway 880 in the East Bay. Exit on Hegenberger Road or 98th Avenue, both roads turn into Airport Road before reaching the airport terminal. The airport is administered by the Port of Oakland. It is located approximately 4.6 miles from Oakland's central business district.
