Open since October 1928, Newark Airport was the first airport in the general New York area. Amelia Earhart dedicated the world's first commercial airline terminal here in 1935, now known as the Newark Airport Administration Building, it is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1948, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took over Newark Airport and has run the facility since then.
There are three passenger terminals at Newark Liberty Airport.
Terminal A handles only domestic flights and a few international flights which have precleared US customs, such as flights originating in Canada.
Terminal B handles the bulk of the international flights as well as some domestic traffic, and Terminal C handles mainly Continental Airlines domestic and international flights.
There are a number of options for ground transportation to and from Newark Airport, including:
• AirTrain, which is a monorail system connecting the three terminals to the Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Link Station, which then connects to Amtrak and the New Jersey Transit systems.
• Buses serve the airport from Newark and other NJ towns, including New Jersey Transit and the Olympia Airporter.
In 2008, more than 35.4 million passengers flew into or out of Newark airport.
To get to Newark airport from the New Jersey Turnpike, exit at Interchange 14 (coming from the north) or at Interchange 13A (coming from the south).
