In 1929, a Los Angeles area realtor acquired 640 acres of property on the Pacific Ocean, just 15 miles southwest of Downtown Los Angeles. Airport runways were constructed on what had been wheat and bean fields. Initially, there were no buildings, but later a terminal-service facility was built. In 1930, Mines Field named after the RE developer, was named the official airport of Los Angeles. In 1937 the property and facility were purchased by the City of Los Angeles at a price that would now seem very cheap, and in 1949 the name was changed to Los Angeles International Airport.
The current facilities include nine passenger terminals; eight focused on domestic flights and the Tom Bradley International terminal which houses the counters and gates of most of the major international air carriers. All of the terminals house a total of eighty-seven domestic carriers and sixty-nine international airlines.
The LAX is a major hub for United Airlines and Alaska Airlines; it is a focus hub for American and Southwest Airlines and the international gateway for Delta Airlines. Passenger traffic at LAX in 2008 totaled nearly sixty million people, about evenly divided between arriving and departing.
LAX is accessed via the Los Angeles freeway system from Interstate 405, the San Diego Freeway, exited at Century Boulevard. The airport property begins just east of Sepulveda and Century Boulevards, with the first-in-the-USA under the runway roadway tunnels on the north and south running Sepulveda.
LAX is actually the core airport of a multiple airport system. This system was developed due to the volume of traffic and the sprawling Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Alternate airports are: Bob Hope Airport (formerly Lockheed Air Terminal and Hollywood-Burbank Airport) in Burbank; John Wayne Airport (formerly Orange County Airport) in central Orange County; Long Beach Airport; Ontario International Airport, the main alternate to LAX when the coastal facility is “fogged-in.”
