Construction on John F. Kennedy International Airport, formerly referred to as
Idlewild Airport, began in 1943. The airport was originally named after the
Idlewild Golf Course on which the facility was built. The airport has experienced
several name changes over the years, in 1948 it's name became New York International Airport, then in 1963, the airport was renamed in memory of President John F. Kennedy, and today the airport is commonly referred to as either “JFK” or “Kennedy.”
JFK airport has eight passenger terminals that are all connected by the airport’s AirTrain system. Each of the passenger terminals offers travelers an array of shopping and dining venues. Various bars and restaurants, retail stores, duty free and travel services, fast food, snacks, news, magazines and book stores are located in each of the passenger terminals. Wi-Fi Wireless Internet Service is available in all terminals too. The airport has numerous rental car companies from which to choose and several hotels are located near the airport.
Operating on a 24 hour basis, the JFK AirTrain offers passengers a convenient way to get around the airport as well as to and from the complex. The JFK AirTrain connects to both the New York City subways and the Long Island rail road. Passengers can travel from the Jamaica or Howard Beach stations to Terminal 1 in a few short minutes.
Approximately 48 million passengers travel through JFK airport on an annual basis. Popular international destinations from JFK include London, Tokyo, Paris, and Frankfurt. Many passengers on domestic flights also travel through JFK.
